Thermal Ribbon
An ink-coated strip used in thermal transfer printers to produce durable and long-lasting labels.
The Ink for Thermal Printers
Unlike a regular printer that uses cartridges, thermal transfer printers use a ribbon. This ribbon is a thin roll coated with wax or resin. When the printer head gets hot, it melts the ink from the ribbon directly onto your label. This is how you get those crisp, black barcodes.
Wax vs. Resin Ribbons
There are different types of ribbons depending on what you need. Wax ribbons are the cheapest and work great for standard shipping labels. Resin ribbons are much tougher; they are used for labels that need to survive chemicals, extreme heat, or heavy rubbing.
- Wax: Good for paper labels and general shipping.
- Wax/Resin: Better smudge resistance for synthetic labels.
- Resin: Extreme durability for industrial use.
Why Not Just Use Inkjet?
Inkjet ink can smudge if it gets wet or damp. In a warehouse, a smudged barcode is a dead barcode. Thermal ribbons create a permanent bond that stays readable even if the box gets rained on or dragged across a floor. It’s the industry standard for a reason.
Maintenance Tip
Always make sure your ribbon is slightly wider than your label roll. This helps protect the expensive print head from direct contact with the paper, which can be abrasive. It’s a simple trick that makes your printer last much longer.
