Thermal Transfer Printing
A printing method that uses a heated ribbon to produce long-lasting, smudge-proof images on various label materials.
Built for the Long Haul
Unlike "Direct Thermal" (which uses heat-sensitive paper), Thermal Transfer uses a wax or resin ribbon. The printer head melts the ribbon onto the label. This creates an incredibly durable image that won’t fade in the sun or smudge if it gets wet. It’s the gold standard for products that might sit in a warehouse for years.
When to Use Thermal Transfer
If you are selling items stored outdoors, chemical products, or high-end electronics, thermal transfer is a must. The labels are resistant to heat, light, and friction. However, for standard 4x6 shipping labels that only need to last for a week of travel, Direct Thermal is usually more cost-effective.
- Produces much sharper and more permanent barcodes.
- Supports printing on plastic and polyester labels.
- Requires the purchase of both labels and ribbons.
