UPC-A vs. UPC-E
The two main versions of the Universal Product Code. UPC-A is the standard 12-digit format, while UPC-E is a compressed version used for very small packages.
Standard vs. Compact
UPC-A is what you see on most products””12 digits that uniquely identify the item. But what if you’re selling a pack of gum or a small cosmetic pencil? That’s where UPC-E comes in. It "suppresses" the zeros in the code to fit into a much smaller physical space while still carrying the same data.
Amazon’s Take on UPC Versions
Amazon generally expects the full GTIN-12 (UPC-A). However, if your physical product only has room for a UPC-E, you must ensure that the digital data in Seller Central matches the full expanded version of that code. Getting this wrong can lead to a "GTIN Mismatch" and listing suppression.
- UPC-A: The full 12-digit retail standard.
- UPC-E: A 6-digit "zero-compressed" format for tiny items.
- Both must be GS1-compliant for Amazon selling.
