Glossary Term
GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)
A unique and internationally recognized identifier for a product, acting as the umbrella term for UPC, EAN, and ISBN barcodes.
The Universal Language of Products
GTIN is the master system that powers global retail. Whether you call it a UPC in the US or an EAN in Europe, they are all part of the GTIN family managed by GS1. Amazon uses GTINs to ensure that every product listing is unique and linked to a verified manufacturer, preventing duplicate or fake listings.
Why You Need a Verified GTIN
Amazon regularly checks its database against the GS1 registry. If you use a "fake" GTIN purchased from an unverified third party, Amazon may suppress your listing or even suspend your account. For private label sellers, obtaining a GS1-registered GTIN is the first step in professionalizing your brand.
- Ensures your product is recognized by all major retailers.
- Required for Amazon Brand Registry applications.
- Forms the basis for your FNSKU and ASIN identifiers.
