Glossary Term
Tracking Number
A unique alphanumeric ID assigned to a package by a carrier (UPS, FedEx, USPS) to allow both the shipper and the customer to monitor its progress in real-time.
The Key to Customer Confidence
A tracking number is the primary way to reduce "Where is my package?" messages. Once you ship an order, the tracking number is uploaded to Amazon or Walmart. It provides "Proof of Shipment," which protects you from "Item Not Received" claims.
Embedding Tracking in Labels
Modern shipping labels include the tracking number both in human-readable text and as a Code 128 barcode. This allows automated sorting machines to scan the box and route it to the correct destination instantly. If the tracking barcode is smudged, the package will be manually delayed.
- Vital for resolving insurance claims for lost items.
- Allows customers to see "Estimated Delivery Date."
- Must be valid and scannable for "Valid Tracking Rate" metrics.
