Glossary Term

Aztec Code

A high-density 2D matrix barcode that requires less space and no quiet zone, commonly used in transportation and ticketing.

Efficient and Compact

Aztec Code is a square 2D barcode that looks a bit like a QR code, but with a 'bullseye' pattern in the center. Its biggest advantage is that it saves space. It can hold a lot of data in a very small area, making it perfect for small products or limited label space.

No 'Quiet Zone' Needed

Most barcodes need a white space around them (a quiet zone) to be scanned properly. Aztec Code doesn't. You can print it right up against other graphics or text, which is a lifesaver when you are designing a very crowded label.

  • Recognizable by the central bullseye.
  • Common in airline boarding passes and train tickets.
  • Easier to scan from mobile phone screens.

Scanning from Any Angle

Because of that bullseye in the middle, scanners can find and read an Aztec Code from any direction””even if it's upside down or sideways. This makes it very fast for high-speed scanning environments like warehouse conveyor belts or busy ticket gates.

Why Not Use It Everywhere?

While powerful, Aztec Code is less common in general e-commerce than QR codes or Data Matrix. However, if you are working with specific logistics providers or international shipping documents, you might encounter it as a standard requirement.
