Barcode labels play a crucial role in the efficient management of Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) shipments. Amazon allows the use of 2D barcodes to provide essential information such as product quantities and expiration dates for each box. By adhering to the prescribed barcode requirements, sellers can expedite the process, reduce errors, and enhance the overall fulfillment experience.

When using 2D barcodes, sellers no longer need to manually provide box content information through Seller Central. Instead, during the shipment creation workflow, they can choose to skip box contents and apply a unique 2D barcode to each box. Amazon can then effortlessly scan these barcodes to determine the specific contents of each box, saving time and eliminating the need for manual data entry.

The advantages of utilizing 2D barcodes are particularly evident for sellers who drop-ship inventory directly from suppliers. With 2D barcodes, suppliers can provide box information without accessing the intricate details of the FBA shipment. Furthermore, for sellers managing high-volume operations, 2D barcodes easily scale to accommodate larger shipments, ensuring smooth and efficient fulfillment processes.

To comply with Amazon's standards, the following 2D barcode formats are accepted:

  1. PDF417 (Recommended):
    • Module width: Minimum 0.020" (0.508 mm)
    • Row height: Minimum 3 modules
    • Error correction: Minimum Level 6
  2. Data Matrix:
    • Supported versions: 14x14, 16x16, 18x18, 20x20, or 22x22
    • Module width and height: Minimum 0.040" (1.016 mm)
  3. QR Code:
    • Module width and height: Minimum 0.040" (1.016 mm)
    • Error correction: Minimum High level

To ensure legibility, barcode labels should be printed at a minimum resolution of 600 DPI. The barcode must contain specific information in a prescribed order, including the AMZN prefix, FBA PO ID, Item ID (ASIN, UPC, EAN, ISBN, or FNSKU), Quantity, and, if applicable, the expiration date in YYMMDD format.

It's important to follow these guidelines:

  • Use uppercase letters for all data fields.
  • Exclude ASINs with a quantity of 0 and pack each box with only one expiration date per ASIN.
  • Avoid packing more than 100 different ASINs in a single box.
  • Provide expiration dates in YYMMDD format.
  • Separate units with multiple expiration dates into different boxes to ensure each box has only one expiration date per ASIN.

By adhering to these requirements, sellers can optimize their FBA shipments, improve fulfillment efficiency, and reduce the chances of errors or delays. Remember, while 2D barcodes enhance the fulfillment process, Amazon shipping labels remain mandatory.
